It was a good month of May for the online casino industry in the state of West Virginia, and it could lead to some big numbers this summer.
For the first time ever, there were four WV mobile and online casinos in operation for an entire month.
The four online casino operators in West Virginia are: BetMGM Casino WV, BetRivers Casino WV, DraftKings Casino WV, and FanDuel Casino WV. These are some of the biggest names in the iGaming industry and all four provide both online sports betting and online casino gaming.
There was more than $138 million wagered online in the state of West Virginia in May, the highest total in the industry. This comes on the heels of a disappointing May, and operators were searching for answers as to why that was the case.
Online casinos in West Virginia generated $4.3 million in revenue for May, which was an increase of 14% from April. Getting more action at the online casinos is big for the sites, but seeing an increase in revenue is the biggest story.
The online casino industry in WV launched in July 2020, but the state has not seen a ton of growth since that time. Land-based casinos in the state are able to partner with the online operators, and they all landed some big names.
The Greenbrier Casino actually partners with both BetMGM and FanDuel, and this allows that casino to take control of the industry. Hollywood Casino has partnered with DraftKings and the Mountaineer Casino offers online casino gaming with BetRivers.
West Virginia has also struggled to become a large sports betting market, but online casinos are performing much better. Retail casinos are back in operation in the state of West Virginia, but most bettors are still choosing to do their betting online.
BetMGM, FanDuel Leading the Way
BetMGM and FanDuel continue to lead online casino industry in West Virginia, but DraftKings is starting to make a charge. BetRivers continues to struggle to keep up, and it’s not likely that it will change anytime soon.
“Our successes in iGaming truly are the result of a lot of hard work from the best team in the industry and we expect it to continue – in New Jersey and across all three other gaming states, particularly as we expand and hone our product offering,” said Matthew Sunderland, vice president of gaming at BetMGM
BetMGM, operating through a deal with Greenbrier brought in over $68 million in wagers for the month of May. DraftKings had a total handle of $65 million, and that operator is starting to close the gap for the Hollywood Casino.
DraftKings is actually outperforming all of the other operators in the state, but a portion of taht money goes back to the casino. If the trends stay the same in the coming months, DraftKings will likely surge ahead of online operations.
